Description
1971 Fiat Dino 2400 Coupe – Ferrari V6 Heritage, Bertone Design, Only 10,568 Miles
In the mid-1960s, Ferrari faced the need to homologate a new V6 engine for Formula 2 racing. To achieve this, Ferrari entered into a strategic industrial agreement with Fiat to produce a series of road cars equipped with the newly developed Dino V6 engine, named in memory of Dino Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari’s late son, who had contributed to its design.
Fiat commissioned Pininfarina to create the open-top Spider in 1966, followed a year later by Bertone’s Coupe, a longer-wheelbase 2+2 grand tourer that offered greater practicality without losing its sporting soul. The coupe quickly outsold the Spider thanks to its refined proportions, comfortable cabin, and impressive performance.
In 1969, the second series debuted with a larger 2.4-liter V6, upgraded independent rear suspension (adapted from the Fiat 130 flagship sedan), and a host of refinements that significantly improved handling and ride quality. With 180 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and a top speed of 205 km/h (127 mph), the Dino 2400 Coupe blended Italian style with Ferrari-engineered performance in a uniquely charismatic package.
Only 2,398 examples of the 2400 Coupe were produced between 1969 and 1972, making them rarer than the earlier 2.0-liter versions.
Exterior – Front View
The Dino 2400 Coupe’s front end is a masterpiece of late-’60s Italian GT design. The slim, twin round headlamps sit recessed under aerodynamic glass covers, flanking a simple chrome grille with the Dino script badge. The sculpted front fenders taper elegantly toward the nose, while the lower valance incorporates slender chrome bumpers with integrated rubber overriders. The long, gently sloping hood hints at the Ferrari-bred V6 beneath.
Side Profile
Bertone’s signature wedge profile gives the car an understated athleticism. The elongated wheelbase, compared to the Spider, provides a more balanced cabin-to-hood ratio and adds room for rear passengers. A crisp shoulder line runs from the headlamps to the tail, intersected by subtly flared wheel arches housing period-correct alloy wheels. Chrome detailing along the window frames and rocker panels underscores the car’s grand touring elegance.
Rear View
At the back, twin round taillights mirror the front’s circular headlamp motif, a nod to contemporary Ferrari styling. The subtle ducktail lip on the trunk lid enhances aerodynamics, while the chrome rear bumper echoes the front’s slender proportions. The exhaust tips exit neatly below, emphasizing symmetry and refinement. The rear glass offers excellent visibility and completes the coupe’s flowing roofline.
Wheels & Tires
Factory-style Cromodora alloys are mounted with period-appropriate radial tires. The wheels present clean finishes and correct Dino center caps, complementing the car’s low-slung stance.
Interior – Front Cabin
The cabin blends sportiness and luxury with unmistakable Italian flair. High-backed bucket seats are upholstered in well-preserved original materials. The wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel frames a full set of original Veglia Borletti instruments, all fully functional. The black dashboard, free of cracks, flows into a center console housing the gated shifter and auxiliary controls. Chrome accents and wood veneer trim on the dash and doors add warmth to the otherwise purposeful layout.
Rear Seats
The 2+2 configuration offers compact but usable rear seating, upholstered to match the fronts. Large side windows and thin roof pillars keep the cabin airy and light-filled.
Engine Bay
The heart of the Dino 2400 Coupe is its 65-degree 2.4-liter Ferrari-designed V6, producing 180 hp at 6,600 rpm. Fed by triple Weber carburetors, it’s mated to a five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels. The engine bay remains clean and authentic, with original fittings and components preserved.
Undercarriage
The independent rear suspension, borrowed and adapted from the Fiat 130, improves both comfort and high-speed stability. The floorpan and chassis components are solid, with no signs of corrosion or accident damage.
Driving Impressions
From behind the wheel, the Dino 2400 Coupe offers a uniquely Italian mix of sharp handling, rev-happy engine character, and long-distance touring comfort. The Ferrari V6 sings through the rev range, while the independent rear suspension soaks up imperfections without sacrificing road feel.
