1963 Volkswagen T1 “DeLuxe” Campmobile | 1 of 200 VWOA Conversions, Exceptionally Original Survivor
This 1963 Volkswagen T1 Campmobile is an extraordinary, unrestored survivor—one of just 200 “Campmobile” conversions built by Westfalia under the approval of Volkswagen of America in the 1960s. Even rarer still, this example is the “DeLuxe” specification, the most complete and upscale version offered. Retaining 100% original paint, woodwork, trim, and fixtures, it is among the most well-preserved Campmobiles known to exist.
Finished in its original factory color with beautifully patinated paintwork and bright, unmolested chrome, this Type 2 camper is more than just a collector’s item—it’s a rolling time capsule. With 56,175 miles showing on the odometer and only three documented owners from new, it remains a true reflection of what Volkswagen once offered in an era where family road trips defined freedom and adventure.
Exterior
Still wearing its original factory paint, this Campmobile proudly displays the natural aging and sun-faded charm that only decades of careful ownership and outdoor memories can create. All body panels remain dead straight, with no signs of rust or previous repairs, a rarity in itself for any unrestored early T1.
All original chrome elements are intact and present beautifully, including the bumpers, trim, and iconic VW nose badge. The self-supporting canopy still functions as intended, and the folding Safari-style front windows offer both charm and airflow. Period-correct glass, seals, and hardware remain unaltered.
Interior
Step inside, and you’re greeted by one of the most complete, unrestored Volkswagen interiors in existence. The cabin features the factory “DeLuxe” camper setup, still intact down to the last detail. All wood cabinetry is original and unrestored, offering storage and functionality in true 1960s fashion. The rear seating area converts into a double bed using original cushions that remain in fantastic condition—an unheard-of feat for an unrestored camper of this age.
The factory-installed camper amenities read like a vintage adventure catalog:
-
Refrigerator
-
Portable gas cooker
-
Chemical toilet
-
55-liter water tank
-
Flip-up side table
-
Magazine rack
-
Faucet and sink
-
Integrated lighting
-
Original curtains
All of these features are not only present, but in working order, creating an environment that feels as authentic as it did when it rolled off the lot in 1963.
The front cabin is equally untouched, featuring the original steering wheel, gauges, dash pad, and seating. The feeling of originality is impossible to replicate—the very fabric of the van exudes its lived-in history, preserved without ever crossing into deterioration.
Mechanical
Power comes from the factory-correct 1493cc flat-four, which starts easily, idles smoothly, and offers the relaxed cruising character expected of a well-kept air-cooled Volkswagen. The manual transmission shifts precisely, the steering remains light and direct, and the ride quality is soft, composed, and as vintage as it gets.
The drivetrain has been carefully maintained and gently exercised, making this not just a showpiece, but a truly driveable vintage camper. Everything from the electrical to the cooling system has been kept in proper operating order, and the vehicle is ready for immediate use or continued preservation.
